“Going nowhere…isn’t about turning your back on the world; it’s about stepping away now and then so that you can see the world more clearly and love it more deeply.” -Pico Iyer
From the eyes of an avid traveller, I would love to touch on the positive effects this Covid-19 pandemic has on our Mother Earth. With planes grounded and factories shut down, there’s an unexpected corollary fall, in greenhouse gas emissions. Globally, this is good news for the environment. Finally! Even for a short moment, our planet is healing. Never have I seen a sky more blue and clearer waters. One thing that I’m looking most forward to, is the end to overtourism in all the top touristic locations around the world. Tourism can provide an incredible economic boost, sure, but it can also be harmful to the environment and put pressure on local populations. Subsequent to this pandemic, travel will become a luxury and may put an end to overcrowded travel spots.
With the Movement Control Order (MCO) imposed on us, this has definitely encouraged me to slow down and reflect on life. It’s so important to practice daily gratitude for all the blessings such as good health, food on the table and a roof over our heads. I’ve also been looking inward, focusing more on mental self care. With all the free time staying at home, I’ve finally finished a few books on self improvement. But as a social creature, I can’t deny that I was definitely affected by ‘cabin fever’ at times. Cooking and home workouts were the best therapy for me, and I’m proud to say I’m a better cook now!
We can’t control this pandemic, but we can control how we react to flatten the curve. We can’t control the feeling of ‘cabin fever’, but we can control how we choose to feel when the four walls start to close in on us. We’re all in this together. Stay home and stay safe!
